Terms of Service

Last updated: August 1, 2026

These terms govern your use of Datum, an iOS application developed by Chris Wang ("we," "us," "the developer"). By downloading or using Datum, you agree to these terms.

1. The Service

Datum is a manual expense-logging journal for iOS. It is not a budgeting tool, a financial advisory service, or a bank-connected app — it does not link to your bank or credit card accounts, and it does not offer financial advice. Datum stores your data locally on your device and syncs it via your personal iCloud account; we do not operate servers that store your financial data.

2. No Account Required

Datum doesn't require you to create an account with us. There's no sign-up, no login, and no username or password to manage. Your data is simply tied to whatever Apple ID is signed into iCloud on your device. If a parent or guardian is setting up Datum on a child's device, iCloud and Family Sharing settings (managed through Apple, not Datum) determine how that data is handled.

3. Subscriptions

Datum offers a free tier and a paid Premium subscription, sold through Apple's App Store:

Billing and renewal. Subscriptions are billed through your Apple ID and renew automatically unless canceled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Your Apple account will be charged for renewal within that 24-hour window. You can manage or cancel your subscription at any time in your iOS Settings under your Apple ID.

Refunds. All purchases are processed by Apple, and refund requests are handled by Apple under its own policies. We don't have the ability to issue refunds directly.

Changes to pricing or plans. We may change subscription pricing or features going forward; any change will not retroactively alter what you've already paid for during an active billing period, and we'll give notice before a renewal is affected.

What Premium includes/excludes may change over time as Datum develops; the current feature set is described in the App Store listing and in-app.

4. Free Tier

The free tier allows unlimited logging with no functional cap — logging is never blocked. Certain features, such as full report history, extended visibility beyond a rolling window, and data export, require Premium. We will not delete your data if you use the free tier or if a Premium subscription lapses; visibility of older data may be limited, but the underlying data remains on your device and in your iCloud account.

5. Your Content

You retain all rights to the data you enter into Datum — your entries, notes, photos, and everything else. We claim no ownership over it and, because it's stored on your device and your personal iCloud account rather than on servers we control, we generally have no access to it at all.

You're responsible for the accuracy of what you log and for keeping your device and Apple ID secure, since that's what protects your data.

6. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

7. Third-Party Services

Datum relies on Apple's iCloud/CloudKit for sync, the Frankfurter API for currency exchange rates, and RevenueCat for subscription management. Your use of Datum is also subject to Apple's App Store terms and, where applicable, RevenueCat's and Frankfurter's own terms of service.

8. Disclaimer of Warranties

Datum is provided "as is" and "as available." We do not warrant that it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that exchange rates, reports, or figures will be accurate in every case — currency conversion in particular depends on a third-party API and may be delayed or unavailable. Datum is a personal journal, not a source of financial, tax, or accounting advice, and shouldn't be relied on as one.

9. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of Datum, including loss of data, to the extent such loss results from causes outside our control (e.g., device loss, iCloud account issues, or Apple platform outages). Because your data lives on your device and your own iCloud account, we strongly encourage you to keep iCloud backup enabled.

10. Termination

You may stop using Datum and delete it at any time. We may suspend or discontinue Datum, or any part of it, at our discretion — for example, if a third-party service we depend on becomes unavailable — though we'll aim to give reasonable notice for anything that affects paid subscribers.

11. Changes to These Terms

We may update these terms from time to time. Continued use of Datum after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised terms. Material changes will be noted in the app's release notes.

12. Governing Law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to conflict-of-law principles, unless otherwise required by the law of your country of residence.
